The Eagle Dance

The Eagle Dance

The Eagle dance was specifically painted for the Arts Festival to celebrate the successful mating of our Mountshannon Eagles and the birth of their two chicks. They are the first White-tailed Sea eagles to be born in Ireland in over a hundred years. Very exciting and a joy to watch from the pier in Mountshannon! This is a detail of the painting the full painting can be viewed under “Recent Paintings”.

Poolbeg. Dublin

This is the second painting in a series of paintings of Poolbeg. For me Poolbeg is Dublin. They are only massive! I love painting them! This painting was specially commissioned for a Dubliner living outside the Pale now.

Iniscrealtra Festival of Arts

1839 Water Colour Event.

In 1839, Richard B. Beechey created panoramic water-colour paintings of Lough Derg landscape aboard a cutter surveying the lake.

The Festial chartered the ‘Spirit of Killaloe” as a floating studio for artists to paint from the same point of reference. I have painted the landscape of Lough Derg often but this was the first oppertunity I have had to paint the landscape from the lake. To see the land from another perspective was a treat. It was a really enjoyable and productive afternoon, the lake was calm, the weather mixed and the company fantastic. I painted two water-colour sketches. All the paintings were later auctioned to pay for the hire of the boat.

The East Clare Artist Exhibition opened on Sunday 27th of May. I painted two painting specifically for the Arts Festival. The painting shown here is of a view near where I live. It is of Moylussa, Sliabh Bernagh, County Clare.  Many of my paintings are of the landscape around beautiful Lough Derg.

The exhibition is in “Derg View Gallery”, Mountshannon. It is open daily from 12-6pm and runs till the June the 4th.

The second painting ” White-tailed Sea Eagles, Bushy Island, Mountshannon” can be viewed at the “Snug Bistro”, Mountshannon.

White-tailed Sea Eagles. Mountshannon.

A pair of White-tailed Sea Eagles have made Bushy Island, Mountshannon their home. The eagles have been here on Lough Derg  for over a year and in April they became the first White-tailed Eagles to nest in Ireland in over 100 years. The breeding pair was originally released in Killarney National Park. Co. Kerry, as part of a White-tailed Sea Eagle reintroduction programme. The birds were brought to Killarney from the island of Froya off the west coast of Norway. Unfortunately the eagles were very young and their first attempt at breeding failed. It was heart-breaking for all.

The eagles are still around and can still be seen roosting on Bushy Island. Lough Derg is now their home and hopefully they will nest on Bushy Island again next year.

I was inspired to do this painting  specifically for the Iniscealtra Arts Festival. The energy, excitement and positivity the eagles brought to the community was extraordinary. They brought the whole community, visitors from all over Ireland and abroad together.

The painting can be viewed in “The Snug Bistro” in Mountshannon. There are prints of this painting also for sale in the Snug.
